Curly Bruns/Ray Ealy Scout Cabin
More than a century ago—in March 1917—Covenant Presbyterian Church of Kansas Citychartered Boy Scout Troop 27 with a desire to help young men lead, explore, and grow.Just five years later, in 1922, our congregation built a scout cabin as a home base for its Scouts.Volunteers raised the walls, the church financed the work and the Ladies Aid Society donatedthe stone fireplace that still stands as the building’s centerpiece.
Today, the “Curly Bruns/Ray Ealy Scout Cabin” stands as a reminder of the courage of twobeloved Scoutmasters. Curly Bruns displayed moral courage as he went against the “whiteflight” mentality that afflicted our neighborhood in the 1960s. And Ray Ealy displayed physicalcourage when he was shot and killed rather than surrendering his wedding band to an armedrobber.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, Covenant’s troop, now combined with Troop 1056, became – andstill remains -- the only troop serving the Southeast area of Kansas City. Through camping,hiking, community service, leadership training and even whitewater rafting, today’s Scoutslearn responsibility, teamwork, courage and confidence. They are becoming tomorrow’s leadersin their schools, churches, families, and neighborhoods. And the Scout Cabin is now a true community anchor. Week after week, it serves as:• A meeting place for neighborhood groups• A safe space for addiction recovery• A rehearsal space for an Africa-themed drum and dance troupe• A home for tai chi and wellness classes• A polling place where our community makes its voice heard• And a gathering spot for many more community needs.
