Pastor Mark Braden is a second career pastor who lives in Fairway, Kansas, with his wife Beth and their two daughters, Paige age 22 and Sarah age 26. Mark and Beth have been married for 33 years. After a 21-year career in business ownership and management in the graphic arts industry, Mark received his call to ministry while serving as a Stephen Minister at Village Presbyterian Church; his home church. He has a heart for pastoral care, preaching and social justice. Mark has focused his career in interim ministry. He has served 7 congregations in Heartland Presbytery as pastor, interim pastor, and temporary supply, Covenant Presbyterian will be the 8th congregation for him to pastor. Additionally, Mark served two rotations at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, in Kansas City as a CPE Chaplain.
At the bottom signature line on all his e-mails you will find these words, “Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, act justly and leave the rest to God.” It is Mark’s ministerial motto and theology.
“God has made a habit of turning me 180 degrees around from what or where I thought I was headed. I always thought that I would always be an independent business owner and ministry never occurred to me as an occupation. I am in my 19th year of lay and ordained ministry. I never considered that God would ask my wife and I to adopt two ethnic children, but God did that. I never thought that my family would be the diversity in many church, social and school activities. As a family we have enjoyed occasionally “shattering a few ceilings.” I never considered or planned that my wife and I would raise a child with a developmental disability, but God placed her in our care and away we went. I never thought that I would enjoy paperwork and bureaucracy, I don’t, I never will, and God so far understands this.”
Mark was surprised and flattered when Kirk approached him to serve as temporary pastor. “Covenant Presbyterian was not anywhere on my radar, I had no idea that Kirk was up for a sabbatical. I had been working on some personal projects and doing some traveling the last year. When Kirk called me, I was really surprised. The more he told me about the work that Covenant does in the community the more excited and energized I became about pastoring this unique church.”
A few insider tips about Mark. He has never seen an episode of “The Game of Thrones,” and prefers the classic movies found on TCM. One day (two to three years from now) he and his wife plan to buy a Recreational Vehicle and spend a year traveling the USA and Canada. He enjoys cooking because he enjoys eating! He is a lifelong Kansas Citian. Do not ask him to sing, runaway when he sings hymns at church.
Mark will join the church beginning June 2, 2019. He is looking forward to learning from you what Covenant Presbyterian means in your life and in the life of your community. You might have already seen him poking around in the halls or perhaps have already heard him preach. He is excited to spend the summer with you while Kirk is away on sabbatical until September 30, 2019.
